More Harvesting and Sowing

November 7, 2010

Possum is 4 years and 6 months

Bandicoot is 2 years and 4 months

Yay!  Time to harvest more goodies from our vege patch!

We harvested the last of the potatoes and broad beans.

The carrots were ready, too.

Apparently, they were sweet and delicious.  I wouldn’t know.  The boys ate them all!

We planted tomato seedlings and strawberries, too.  We haven’t had much luck with either – the strawberries are not enjoying the wet weather and some critter (I am guessing something small and furry) has eaten all our tomatoes before they ripened!

Do you know what these seeds are?

They have been carefully planted…

They are radish seeds!  They are supposed to take 6 weeks to maturity, but we will see – everything seems to take a lot longer in our garden.

And here is a gratuitous cute shot of Bandicoot.

Harvest Time! And Planting Time, too.

Possum is 4 years and 4 months

Bandicoot is 2 years and 2 months

We had lots of fun digging up the spuds in our square foot garden.  Unfortunately, this was the entire crop from two plants!

Ah, never mind.  We roasted them for dinner, and you have never tasted a potato so good!  Next year we will need to plant more.

We also started our strawberry planter today.  It was rather too heavy once full to hang in the spot I had planned.  We have found a lovely sunny spot in the front yard for them to grow.  Fingers crossed for a yummy crop this summer!

First Day of Homeschool

August 9, 2010

Possum is 4 years and 3 months

Chicken is 2 years and 1 month

We finally did it! After (too) much planning, I finally bit the bullet and started homeschool today. The boys loved it!

For an update, Possum is now 4 and 3 months (he goes to preschool one day a week) and Chicken is 2 and 1 month.

We are doing a garden “unit study” based on a different book each week. This week our “text book” is “The Carrot Seed” by Ruth Krauss and Crockett Johnson.
"The Carrot Seed"

Most of my ideas have come from these websites:
Adventures for Toddlers Curriculum by the Arkansas Government
Homeschool Share
and from the book, “Before Five In A Row”

So these were my materials today:

This is my classroom:

The boys had a great time with the carrots, and were very excited to discover that the leaves were the same size as the baby carrots growing in our Square Foot Garden vege patch. I had thought that the carrots would last a few days and had planned on cooking them for dinner on Wednesday, but they were all eaten by my “bunnies” before lunch time today!

A big THANK YOU to Carisa at 1+1+1=1″
for inspiring me to give this a go.
